I so desperately want Scotland to say YES.
I’m a Geordie. I have always identified as Geordie, then British, European, Earther - NEVER “English.” How could I? I grew up under the fascist boot-heel of Thatcher, who’s despotic regime sold off productive industries, broke my town down and tried to flog it for scrap, raised an army of anonymous police and set the citizenry against itself in a way that we’d not seen before. In a way that… well.. if this government isn’t just a bad acid flashback to the bad old days.
Don’t get me wrong. The Labour party of the time was a fucking joke. A handful of good people leading a mob of tweety dinosaurs. Don’t get me started on the sheer mountains of disappointment I have there.
But this vote for independence is the nearest thing to actual democratic process this nation has seen in my entire lifetime. Our choices are usually “the devil you know,” “it’s the other guy’s turn” or “they’re all the same” and FOR ONCE there is a real alternative.
A Yes vote IS NOT a vote for Alex Salmond. It’s a vote for “none of the above.” It’s a vote for “Westminster? Get tae shite, ye wee feck.” And that Westminster has rallied behind the No vote tells me that Yes is the only answer. A No vote is a vote for Etonian assholes ruling from ivory towers. It’s a vote for the 1%. A vote for the bankers who got this planet into the shit state that its in. Do you really want to back that?
Here’s the thing:
If you vote No because of “the devil you know…” and you fear change, then you’re an asshole.
If you vote Yes because “screw Westminster” then you’re an asshole.
Any right-thinking people want self-determination. This is your chance, your ONE chance for a generation. Use it wisely.
And, for goodness sake, take the North with you when you go. We’d pay that back in blood if you asked nicely.
